What Are Valley Irons and Why Are They Critical?

Valley irons — also called valley gutters or valley channels — are the metal troughs that sit in the internal angles of your roof where two roof planes meet. These valleys are among the highest water-flow areas on any roof. During heavy Perth downpours, they channel significant volumes of rainwater from converging roof surfaces down into the gutter system.

Because of the volume of water they handle, valley irons must be in excellent condition. Even a small rust hole, a lifted edge, or debris buildup in a valley can cause water to overflow beneath the surrounding tiles and into the roof cavity. Our Valley Iron Replacement Process

Replacing valley irons is a precise job that requires lifting tiles on both sides of the valley, removing the old channel, and installing a new one with correct overlap and sealing. Our qualified roof plumbers follow a methodical process:

1. On-site inspection — We assess the condition of all valleys on your roof, checking for rust, holes, debris buildup, and flashing integration issues.
2. Material selection — We recommend Colorbond or Zincalume replacement channels, both of which offer significantly better corrosion resistance than traditional galvanised steel. Colorbond valleys are available in colours to complement your roof.
3. Tile removal and preparation — Tiles along both sides of the valley are carefully lifted and stacked. The old valley iron is removed along with any deteriorated sarking or underlay.
4. New valley installation — The replacement channel is laid with correct overlap, adequate fall, and proper integration with adjacent flashings. We use pop rivets and quality sealant at all joins.
5. Tile reinstatement — Tiles are relaid with correct overlap into the valley channel, ensuring adequate clearance for water flow. Any cracked tiles discovered during the process are flagged for replacement.
6. Final check and clean-up — We flush the new valley with water to confirm unobstructed flow, then clean up all debris.

Colorbond vs Zincalume: Which Is Right for Your Roof?

Both materials are manufactured by BlueScope Steel and offer excellent corrosion resistance in Perth conditions:

• Zincalume — A zinc-aluminium alloy coating that provides outstanding corrosion protection at a lower cost. Ideal when the valley is hidden and colour matching is not a concern.
